FAQ

Q. How can I read the password protected pages? What are they for?
A. These pages are for currently enrolled students to read class follow up notes as well as daily training tips and hints. The passwords change each session. Please enjoy these pages by enrolling in the next class session.

Q. I think I'd like to enroll. Can I watch a class before I do so?
A. Yes, please do. Email me to let me know you will be attending. You'll need a folding chair so you can be part of the group. Please leave your dog at home when viewing a class.

Q. I want to have my dog become a Therapy Dog. Do you teach these skills in your classes?
A. Many of my students become Therapy Dogs or Service Dogs. Since each therapy dog group has its own protocols I cannot teach all the groups' requirements. Rather, your dog will lean the basic skills and manners all groups require.

Q. Why can't I take my dog to the dog park while in class with you? He likes the park and needs the exercise.

A. You are most welcome to take your dog to every dog park in Orange County when you are not in class. Dogs who go to dog parks while enrolled become frustrated when on a leash in the class environment. Time is wasted and dogs worsen in  behavior when they constantly lunge out at the end of the leash and bark in frustration now that they are not free to move as they are accustomed to in the presence of other dogs. You will get far better results in class by not going to dog parks and dog beaches while in class and I do ask that all students agree to that.

Q. Do you train Service Dogs?

A. No. If you need basic manners the classes provide that. You can register your dog online as a Service Dog with several different organizations.

Q. I try to exercise my dog to tire him out. But he still has too much energy. Can your classes help?
A. Yes. It is a myth that physical exercise will tire out a dog, no matter how many rocks you put in his backpack. Rather, mental and emotional energy spent in training is a more efficient way to do this. An hour in class produces a tired, and calm. pet. You too!

Q. Why don't you use choke chains? I used them to train all my dogs and they turned out fine.

A. Choke chains were once the only tool we had to train. Now, there are so many other kinds of equipment to use that shorten training time and make the training process physically easier for the human.

Q. My dog barks and lunges at other dogs. He just wants to play. Can I enroll him in a class?

A. Yes, and that class is the Miss Manners class for dogs who do not like other dogs. Many dogs who bark and lunge so pose a threat to other pets, and, this kind of problem is not addressed in the Basic Companionship or Puppy/Beginner Class. The Rescue/rehabilitation class is the best way to help your dog.

Q. I can't decide on a Yorkie Terrier or a Great Dane. Can you help me pick the right breed?
A. Yes. I can help you find the right breed with a Phone Consultation.

Q. I enjoy the writing on your Calling All Dogs blog and learn from the stories. Will you have a blog that is more nuts and bolts, too? Maybe more with techniques of training and solving dog problems? Can we get both?
A. Thanks for reading the blog that is stories about dogs, humans and on occasion, Sandy Koufax. Yes, I will soon have a second blog, the DogThink blog, that is less fiction writing and more training techniques. Until then subscribe to the Calling All Dogs blog on the Home Page.
