Hello all owners of dogs who do not like other dogs. Here are excerpts from a Miss Manners session from the password protected pages. You'll get follow up notes as well as daily training tips when you enroll in the next session.
When walking past a dog behind a fence, the kind that races up and down
barking at you and your pooch, cross the street. Instead of making your
dog walk past a dog who threatens and yells at him, cross the street
and spare everyone.
Dogs remember where the 'bad dogs' live. Actually, its bad owners. Dogs kept behind fences learn to over react to passing
dogsand bark, hit the fence with their front feet and try to
get over the wall. These poor dogs, the prisoner dogs, will damage your
dog each time they explode, even if they do not actually bite your dog.
The stress and fear of walking past these dogs is extreme. Don't do it.
Plan for a disaster. If there is an equipment malfunction do you have backup? Do you look both ways before going
out the door, the garage the car? Details count.
Prisoner dogs. Avoid them. Cross the street. Walk in the middle of the street. Don't drag your dog along prisoner row.
Most of what you hear and read about dogs, aggressive dogs in popular culture do the opposite.
If someone has a better resume than me listen to them. If they don't, listen to me.
Dog parks, dog beaches and dog day cares makes dogs worse. All three are problematic for your dogs and should be avoided.
"He's in training" to stop people from approaching your dog. "He's got
scabies" is another good one. Dogs who approach yours will not help.
Going to the vet? Prepare for this like you are gong into battle. Don't
sit in the waiting room with your dog! That is why cell phones and texts
are in our lives.
Other people never 'get it.' Don't relinquish the leash to them. One
mistake, and they surely will make more than that, will be a disaster
for your dog.
Stay with them when they are treated at the vet's. I understand why
veterinarians now take the dog to the back for treatment and perhaps, if
I were a veterinarian, I would do the same. Just have a please and
thank you attitude about it and I bet you and your vet will come to an
agreement about that.
Groomers. Ah......if you are interested in a mobile groomer, and you
should be, here is the only groomer I allowed to touch my personal pets.
Sandy and Dave

Dogs do not make mistakes with their mouths. If the dog tore flesh from a
human arm that is what he meant to do. If he snapped in the air and
'just missed me' that is also what he meant to do. No human moves faster
than a dog.
Dogs become aggressive to other dogs for many reasons. None of which are
because you are not the Alpha or not firm enough. You are just fine as
dog owners. Your dogs have a background of being attacked by other dogs, going to the dog park, lack of exposure to dogs or dogs with an unknown past, such as the rescue dogs in class. None of these reasons have anything to do with your relationship with your dog.
TV dog trainers show you highly edited material, and are most
like narcissists with a 300.00 haircut with a history of brutalizing dogs.
Just a thought....
Wanna make the dog go nuts in the car and crash you into oncoming
traffic? Leave him loose in the car and you're in the running. Our less
than happy with other pets dogs need to be restrained while riding in
the car. They should dash from window to window shouting at
other dogs and getting themselves worked up into a lather. Now, there
are more car restraints and car seat belt harnesses than spots on a
Dalmatian. Hie thee to an online store or a walk in one and strap that
pooch in. He'll shut his little mouth and stop bullying other pets from
the safety of his little shell on wheels.
Sits and downs. Where is the dog's brain? Get the brain to direct the
body and you wont have to wrestle the dog to the ground.
Stays. Can you walks away from the dog, return, and reward?
The more rewards the better and the better the reward the smarter the
dog. Make the reward better than launching out for another dog so break
out the hot dog, cheese and chicken.
Dogs are marvelous waiters and a home alone dog, even for a 12 hour
day, is just fine. Dogs are fabulous at this waiting game so you dont
need to quit your job and stay home. Just have a nice life and the pooch
will do fine.
Zoom Grooms are the best brush on the market. You'll swear by them,
too. The best bath is the least bath, unless your dog need regular
grooming to keep his hair out of his eye. Dog's coats are naturally oily
and should be that way.
When you see a moving dog try the watch me. You wont be able to use
this technique each time but now that you've got it in your doggie
arsenal you've got one more way to manage your dog.
Shadow was a star today, but, that is because of his owner, Linda.
Linda has been driving to classes for almost a year, either as a student
or as an 'outrider.' With seven homes by the time Shadow was 18 months, it
is safe to say that this little life was saved by Linda and her
determination, as well as some smart training. Well done.
